Whirl on in!
This site is for CLC middle school students to share thoughts and learn together while reading the novel Whirligig by Paul Fleischman. To submit a post for one of the chapter blogs, just use the form.
We started our study in class by connecting our experience at the fantasy art exhibit "Cute and Creepy" at a local university to the three whirligigs (made by artist T.R. Reed, pictured above) that hang from our classroom's air conditioner vents.
Then we listened to audio of the first 42 pages of Fleischman's novel together. This took us up to the point when the main character, Brent, is asked to make restitution by building four whirligigs to place at the four corners of the U.S. Over the strong objections of his parents, Brent says, "I'll do it."
We decided that it would be fun to have a website for interacting while we finished the book individually at our own pace. So, check out the chapter blogs and see what we're doing.
NOTE: Ms. Laura bought the S. Triple, Bird of Paradise, and Magic Carpet Sweeper whirligigs from artist T.R. Reed and has had them in her classroom for many years. Photos by Laura.
